The future needs to be carbon zero. There is no doubt about it, fossil fuels are too harmful. That is why we need to look toward future clean electricity generation solutions. Luckily for us, new technologies are being invented and developed as we speak. In this post, we want to show you some interesting existing examples of what future clean electricity generation could look like!
New Bio-fuel Technologies
Emerging new technology in bio-fuel is quite interesting. There are generally two main new technologies that are viable for the future. Celluosic ethanol is produced from cellulose often wood, grass, algae and other plants. Specifically the fibrous parts of the plant that is mostly inedible for humans and animals. Biodiesel sourced from microalgae is exactly what it says on the tin. It is a renewable source of biofuel that seems to be the best way to meet the growing energy demand.
A new type of hydro power that takes the power of the tides to generate electricity! Being more predictable than wind or the sun, tidal power is definitely a suitable future clean technology. Though it is still not widely used, it has the potential. Mainly due to the high cost of development. The first tidal power plant was implemented in France. The Rance Tidal Power Station began operation in 1966. The largest power station until the South Korean Sihwa Lake Tidal Power Plant, operating in 2011.
Solar Panels in Space!
Yes, you read that right, solar panels in space! Though this has not been implemented or tested, this is a rough concept. The system will be implemented in space as a orbital solar power station. Orbiting the earth and collecting energy from the sun. This would be theoretically more efficient and have a much longer conversion period. Our current solar panels loose a lot of their efficiency on Earth due to reflection or absorption. This system would cost a vast amount to make and send into orbit, though this is not the only issue. Transmitting the energy back to Earth is a large obstacle. A wireless power transmission is the most realistic solution proposed currently. This poses issues all on it’s own without even considering how it would work from space!
Transparent Glass PV
Fully integrated glass panels with solar cells, yep, now that sounds like the future! Using a tin-oxide coating on the inner surface of the glass to conduct current of the cell. The cell contains titanium oxide that is coated with a photoelectric dye. Converting ultraviolet light into electricity, these panels will be used to replace conventional glass windows in the future. It can even be placed over current window glass and cover a wide area.
Automated Solar Panel Positioning
Similar to how the Smart Flower operates, as discussed in one of our blogs, robots could be used to automatically position solar panels for maximum conversion. These robots are only small scale, but they are able to adjust solar panels systems. Re-positioning them in accordance with weather conditions. Which, in turn, will make them much more efficient than stationary solar panels. Though these robots are currently in use, they will undoubtedly have a much bigger role in future clean technology.
